Ageing gracefully with technology – are we ready?

The focus was on digital solutions designed to meet the growing need for home care and assistance for an ageing population. In their presentations, speakers Antonio Bruno from artiso and Prof. Dr. Johannes Schobel from Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences gave a detailed insight into the challenges and opportunities of digitalization in care and healthcare. A special highlight of the day was the presentation by Prof. Dr. Dr. Manfred Spitzer, Medical Director of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy III at Ulm University Hospital. Under the title “AI – for a life worth living?”, Spitzer spoke about the opportunities and challenges of AI in everyday life.

Private lecturer and artiso expert Antonio Bruno shed light on the challenges of an increasingly ageing European society. In his presentation “A Technical Perspective of the AI in Home Care”, he presented mind-by.care, a digital assistance solution that offers scalable and partially automated support for senior citizens and can be easily operated by voice. This should help older people to become more autonomous and relieve the burden on care staff. Bruno clearly explained how the app can manage reminders and daily activities by voice command and increase the well-being of older people through an intuitive user interface.

Prof. Dr. Johannes Schobel took the audience on a journey through current digital projects in his lecture
How digitalization is transforming the healthcare sector”, Prof. Dr. Johannes Schobel took the audience on a journey through current digital projects in the healthcare sector and presented current projects such as
stand-by.care. This technology detects falls in the home and can quickly raise the alarm to increase the safety of senior citizens living alone. Schobel, who works at the DigiHealth Institute at Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences, conducts research into mobile health applications and artificial intelligence in the healthcare sector. He emphasized that mHealth solutions – i.e. mobile health applications – are now ubiquitous and versatile. Although they offer great potential for greater safety and efficiency, they also face major challenges: Data protection concerns, legal requirements and the complexity of medical data make it difficult to implement technical innovations. Particularly in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning, projects often encounter hurdles such as the lack of quality and availability of data.

In his lecture “AI – for a life worth living?”, Prof. Dr. Manfred Spitzer addressed the potential and risks of artificial intelligence (AI) in various areas of life. AI has been omnipresent since the introduction of ChatGPT in 2022, but it often remains unclear what AI can actually achieve and where there are dangers. Prof. Spitzer brought in examples from medicine, climate and environmental protection as well as everyday applications to show how AI is already influencing life today. The lecture offered an in-depth examination of how AI can contribute to solving pressing social problems – and where ethical boundaries need to be observed in order to use the technology responsibly and for the benefit of people.

Innovative approaches for the digital transformation in the healthcare sector

The artiso INNO DAY not only brought together innovative ideas and solutions, but also showed how crucial digitalization and the meaningful integration of artificial intelligence will be for the future of care and healthcare. The speakers made it clear that although the digital transformation of the healthcare sector is complex, it offers great opportunities – for greater efficiency, convenience and safety. The showcases presented by artiso demonstrated practical applications for the care sector: mind-by.care – AI-supported reminder assistance for senior citizens, stand-by.care – an intelligent fall detection system and rag.care – an innovative knowledge database for care staff. These technologies are designed to take the strain out of day-to-day care, increase efficiency and improve people’s quality of life. The great interest and positive feedback from participants underlined the relevance and topicality of these topics.

“We are delighted with the positive response to INNO DAY 2024, which encourages us to play an active role in shaping the future of care,” says Volker Rath, Managing Director of artiso solutions GmbH. “This event has once again shown that Ulm is a strong center for digitalization and future technologies. Thanks to our dedicated team, the expert speakers and our partners, we were able to put on an all-round successful event.”
